Easy, Healthy Chicken Tikka Masala

  • 1 ½ pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs cut into 1-inch chunks
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ tablespoons avocado oil
  • ½ medium red onion diced
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 ½ teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground turmeric
  • 2 roma tomatoes ripe
  • 1 cup chicken broth bone broth for extra richness
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves


  • Season the chicken chunks with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper.
  • Heat 1 ½ tablespoons of avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the chicken and diced red onion to the skillet.
  • Cook until the chicken turns golden brown, which takes about 4-5 minutes.
  • Stir in 3 tablespoons of tomato paste, minced garlic, freshly grated ginger, garam masala, chili powder, and ground turmeric.
  • Cook for about 1 minute until the spices become fragrant.
  • In a blender, puree the two Roma tomatoes and 1 cup of chicken bone broth until smooth.
  • Pour the tomato and bone broth puree into the skillet with the chicken.
  • Season it with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to simmer.
  • Stir occasionally and let it cook for about 10 minutes or until it reduces and thickens.
  • Finally, add 1/4 cup of heavy cream to the skillet.
  • Stir until the cream is heated through, which takes about 1 minute.
  • Serve your chicken tikka masala immediately, garnished with chopped fresh cilantro leaves.
